Hot off the heels of their single launch, Space Flamingo are gearing up for an intense release season with their debut EP.
Teasing on their social media, Space Flamingo's stylised and cultivated imagery paves the way for 'ATRIA'; a mix-match of influences stemming from each band member's contribution to the sonic space.
"Whether it’s Aaron’s love for the alternative, Amy’s fondness for funk, Nick’s desire for desert rock, or Reece’s penchant for progressive.
We find harmony amongst the chaos."
Space Flamingo describes their mix of perspectives on this EP as "culminating in a sound that is distinctly our own" while taking inspiration from 'Queens of the Stone Age' and 'Muse' in the composition. Listeners should expect to find production elements reminiscent of 'Nothing But Thieves' and 'Royal Blood'. We reached out to Space Flamingo for more information on their production process, feature tracks on the EP, and the evolution of their sound.
How would you describe the new EP from the approach of your previous work? Are there similarities to your past releases or is it the same Space Flamingo that we know and love?
ATRIA is a departure from everything we’ve done before. Where previously our goal was to capture our live sound, this EP was designed to shape our performances going forward.
Spanning our first-ever song to our most recent (at the time of recording), ATRIA covers a lot of ground. Taking lessons from our previous releases, we deconstructed and rearranged each track with brutal honesty.
“Is this section repetitive?”
“Would a different chord hit harder?”
“What if we don’t play anything here at all?!”Through the process, understanding what elements of our music were fundamental. By refining our music, we ultimately started defining it.
Over the years, we’ve also built an infrastructure to support stems in our live production, freeing us up to be more experimental in the studio. We embraced impossible sounds, synthetic drums and stacked layers of synth. This was the paradigm shift. The album's production informs the live performance.
Is ATRIA the same old Space Flamingo? No. It’s more intentional, experimental, and expressive than ever.
Any stand-out titles that you're prepared to name-drop aside from the recent single, 'Forest Creatures'?
ATRIA is packed with diverse tracks, making it tough to pick a stand-out. Forest Creatures was chosen as the lead single because it epitomized the overall sound, but if we had to name-drop another, it would be Airwaves.
Originally, ATRIA was a four-track EP with no plans to expand. However, in an early session with our producer Joel Myles, we played a rough recording of Airwaves. As we’re listening, gently nodding to the beat, in our own worlds. We can see Joel is fully locked in to the song. As the track came to a close, he turned to us and said something to the effect of:
‘Why isn’t this on the EP?’
‘Ah, you know, we thought it wasn’t-’
‘Guys, this is the heart of the album.’It’s the song that has felt the most elevated throughout production and we’re incredibly grateful Joel pushed us to record it. It’s a haunting, emotional, beautiful collection of soundwaves.
What was the recording process like? Did you live-track the whole EP as a band or was it a painstaking take-by-take basis for each song?
Before hitting the studio, we live-tracked our demos, but from there, we rebuilt everything from the ground up: drums first, then guitars, synths, vocals, and finally backing vocals. The process took time, but focusing on each layer individually allowed us to highlight every element exactly as we envisioned. We also had the space to experiment and push the production to strange places, some of our favourite moments were found through the process.
How have you been preparing for the release of the EP as well? Are there any launch shows or public listening parties you're prepared to talk about?
We have a lot of exciting things to share in the lead up to, and post the EP’s launch, so stay tuned on our socials for updates and details. One thing we can share, is there will be a few ways to enjoy ATRIA beyond just listening, in the months to come.
Forest Creatures is streaming now, wherever you listen to your music.
ATRIA releases on the 16th of May 2025, and is available for pre-save now.
